About Us

Agriculture Machinery and Technology Centre (AMTC), then known as Agriculture Machinery Centre (AMC) was established in 1983 with the vision to realize national food self-sufficiency through promotion of labor-saving farm technologies. This vision placed the Bhutanese farmers at the core of all agriculture development activities. AMTC aligned itself strategically to contribute towards the achievement of the vision through enhanced effectiveness and efficiency in Bhutanese farming practices.

 It embarked on the program to mechanize Bhutanese agriculture through use of appropriate farm machinery equipment and tools. Over the years, AMTC has partnered itself with the Bhutanese farmers to choose, create and innovate agricultural technologies and farming practices which are appropriate to the Bhutanese farm terrain and ecological conditions.

Until 2016, AMTC’s core activities involved hiring of farm machineries (instituted in 2013), repair and sales of agricultural machineries, research and development activities to ensure appropriate farm machinery technologies were produced, standardization and certification of farm machinery to ensure safe, efficient and quality farm technologies in the country, and provide training on farm machinery operations.

There has been a significant change in the AMTC’s core activities, when hiring service and other commercial activities, and agriculture machinery training program (AMTP) were handed over to Farm Machinery Corporation Limited (FMCL) in the year 2016 and 2022 respectively.  Since then, AMTC’s responsibilities were restructured and reorganized under ARID in view of the necessity to reprioritize the research program on modernizing farm technology which are safe and efficient for the farmers to use. Agriculture Machinery and Technology Center was assigned a new mandate, specifically geared towards Agri 4.0-related research. This includes areas such as precision agriculture, drone technology, automation, vertical farming, and utilization of IoT (Internet of Things), among other innovative approaches.

In light of these redefined objectives, AMTC is mandated with two distinct programs: the Agriculture Machinery Research Program (AMRP) and the Agriculture Machinery Certification Program (AMCP)
